Yankara Attack: 10 Civilians Injured as Gunmen Clash with Security Forces

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, gunmen launched a violent attack on Yankara town in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State at approximately 9:00 AM. The assailants attempted to storm the town, unleashing a barrage of gunfire that sent residents scrambling for safety.

Eyewitnesses reported that mobile police officers engaged the gunmen in a fierce firefight. During the exchange, bullets shattered the windows of the police vehicle and punctured one of its tires. Reinforcements from the military arrived shortly after, compelling the attackers to retreat under heavy fire.

In the aftermath of the attack, witnesses confirmed that the gunmen injured at least 10 civilians in Yankara. The injured were promptly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. There is no confirmation yet on whether any police officers or soldiers were injured during the confrontation.

Later in the day, around 4:00 PM, the gunmen resurfaced, blocking the road between Sheme and Yankara. As of now, the road remains closed despite the deployment of additional military forces to the area.

This attack is just one of many incidents reflecting the deteriorating security situation in Katsina State. Over recent months, the state has witnessed a significant rise in armed attacks, kidnappings, and banditry, especially in rural areas. The increasing boldness of these criminal groups has instilled fear among residents and has posed a severe challenge to local authorities.

Despite efforts by security forces to curb the violence, the situation remains dire. Communities in Katsina State are living under constant threat, with many areas becoming no-go zones due to the frequent presence of armed groups.
